Are You a Writer?

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Do you have a book or a story or a journal or a course or articles or a blog or poetry inside of you?

What if our definition of writer was – quite simply – someone who writes (or who longs to write)?

What then?

Are you still wondering if you are a writer?

Or are you already a writer, but you feel blocked or stuck or uncertain or otherwise don’t write?

Then it is very possible that somewhere along the way, you were told and believed a lie. You believed the lie that writers were the ones who got good marks on their writing, or who wrote ‘good’ things, or who wrote books, or who got published. Or maybe you learned that you’d never make a living writing, so it wasn’t worth your time. Or you believed that what you wrote wasn’t for anyone else’s eyes, so it wasn’t really writing.

I’m here to say that all of that is codswallop.

We were told that rubbish about writers because people with creative souls are different: their imaginations and their capacity for wonder are incredibly powerful. And that makes people nervous. Creating worlds or questioning the nature of your reality with your voice or your pen or your pencil or your computer – or even your crayons – is not something that fits neatly into a well-behaved box.

Writers (and artists) are the translators of the something more that we as a collective long for.

Writers are the voice of the unknown; conduits for Mystery. They show us what’s possible when we are distracted from the silly notion that what we can see, touch, hear and taste is all that is possible. They make us question what we have been taught is true.

Writers show us a world of expanded possibilities – yes, even if the only place that they write is in their journals. I believe that all true writing sends ripples out into the world, even if it is only ever read by the writer.

Writers are anyone who love to write – who have some need to write – no matter what shape that writing takes.

If you get ideas that are out-of-the-ordinary; if you sense other possibilities; if you ask; if you yearn to tell the world – or just one other person (real or imaginary) – something, then my dear one, you are a writer.
