Day 2: What Delights You?

Hi there,

Okay! So let's go back to that last list you made yesterday.

What creatively delights you?

Do you know?

Do you even remember making a list like that?

Well, you didn't exactly make that list. This was the question:

  1. Make a list of everything you'd love to do this week (and for once I am telling you to be realistic. Only put things on the list that are actually possible in this reality, this week.)

If you didn't do that list yesterday, or if you don't think anything on that list creatively delights you, then do that before you go any further.

Because the things that you love to do are things that bring you delight. If you can couple things you love with being creative, then you are going to do something really special.

I know that this is a school about writing, but today I'm inviting you to play with words in a way that has nothing to do with writing.

That's your whole assignment.

How can you play with words and love and creativity?

Well, first you could look at that list and see where you could match up this assignment with something you would love to do.

After all, if you know what delights you and the assignment is to play, it's just logical to put them together.

Right?

Assignment:

  1. Find a way to combine playing with words with something that you love to do or that delights you. (That isn't writing.)
  2. Do it for at least an hour.

I know. This is supposed to be a challenge. We're not going to fill the tank by doing the same things we always do. Refreshment comes from freshness. Play with this. Wonder. Do a few things. Do the first thing that comes up and then make a list and also do the 37th thing that comes up. Combine two things that make no sense together.

Let yourself be drawn by two of the things you love. Go for a walk and make up silly names for things. Leave post-its with words on them behind you everywhere you go. Take a single word that matters to you (your word of the year for example) and paint or draw or doodle it 1,000 times. Love a long, hot bath? How could you bring playing with words into that? Love sci-fi or movie marathons or romance novels? How could you bring creativity with words into that? (How about using words your favourite character says to make something beautiful?) Love cooking? Make something into words or letters.

Love + Creativity + Words = something new.

Refresh yourself.

DON'T AVOID THIS ONE. It's hard on purpose. Trust me.

With so much love,
