Day 5: Writing Delight

Hi there,

Okay, we are (finally) bringing it back to writing.

Like anything else, writing can become a habit. We can choose the things that feel easy for us rather than the things that expand and delight us.

THIS IS NOT WRONG.

But if/when we feel uninspired or unimaginative or blocked or bored or stuck or when we just aren't showing up at the page, it is time to wonder about what might creatively delight us.

  1. When do you remember being creatively delighted by writing?
  2. What reading delights you?

Today I am challenging you to write something that delights you.

For example:

I write courses and fiction and non-fiction. I love to read magical witchy romance-y fiction. I don't write it, but it might delight me to write a scene that I feel like was left out of the book I am reading. Or it might delight me to write an Epilogue (as I am always sad when it's over). It might delight me to write a few character studies for the magical creatures that I could someday put into a book. It might delight me to write a 90s women's rock inspired poem. It might delight me to make a list of 1,100 things to be happy about (I did this once. It was awesome.) It might delight me to write a silly instruction manual for something or a bit of clever bathroom graffiti or to design a whole line of t-shirts and find just the right quotes. It might delight me to write product descriptions for things that I want to own, or to create an imaginary air bnb listing for my perfect house. It might delight me to write dating profiles for characters in an action movie, or for the people I see sitting near me who I don't know.

Writing is something that - again - we get into patterns and habits with. Creative delight is about light and air and doing something for the love and the joy of it. When we have SHOULDS in writing, or deadlines in writing, or only half an hour to write, some of the joy can get sucked out.

Return to writing delight. Maybe make a new habit of writing something that delights you and has nothing to do with what you are actually writing once a week.

Write something, right now, that lights you up creatively. See what comes of it.

With so much love,
